Do you drive for Uber Eats? Then you may want to know what kind of Uber Eats health insurance is available to you. Just like any type of work, driving for Uber Eats does carry its risks.
After all, an accident happens. Knowing what kind of insurance coverage that Uber provides should help you handle an emergency if it happens.
For now, Uber Eats doesn’t directly offer health insurance for their drivers. But they have a concern for the health and safety of the driver.
Uber as the main founder of Uber Eats understands that health insurance is very important to their thousands of independent drivers. That’s why Uber loves Obamacare.
Uber CEO Travis Kalanick was quoted in a Washington Post article that Obamacare was “huge” for his ridesharing business.
He says that “The democratization of those types of benefits allows people to have more flexible ways to make a living.”
So, people don’t need to rely on their employers for healthcare insurance anymore. They are free to decide the best health care coverage for their life.
Since Uber Eats does not offer healthcare coverage insurance, the third party can provide valuable insurance programs for the drivers who are classified as “independent contractors”.
Uber Eats Health Insurance Programs For The Drivers
Let’s know the basics insurance program first.
Although Uber Eats is a food delivery service, the Uber Eats health insurance should not be that different from that of existing Uber insurance.
If you don’t know about the existing Uber insurance, here are some of the basics.
Once an Uber driver accepts a ride is in the middle of transporting passengers, Uber provides a $1,000,000 of liability insurance per accident.
Also, they provide another $1,000,000 of underinsured/uninsured motorist insurance benefits per accident that involves an Uber vehicle.
If the Uber app is turned on but the Uber driver is currently not carrying any passenger at the moment, Uber still provides insurance coverage.
Uber provides a $25,000 for property damage, $50,000 for each person in an accident as well as $100,000 for each accident.
In case there is a passenger or more in the vehicle and accident happens, Uber may make the collision/comprehensive insurance available
Do the above conditions apply the same to Uber Eats? Since Uber Eats doesn’t involve any passenger and only drivers, how the insurance is applied and provided may be different from the Uber insurance.
Below, we will explain the insurance coverage that Uber provides for Uber Eats drivers according to Uber’s official website.
Uber Insurance Coverage
Coverage 1: Uber provides a $1,000,000 million commercial auto liability coverage which applies per covered incident.
This insurance coverage applies when an Uber Eats driver either accepts a request for food delivery or is in the process of delivering the food.
If an accident occurs, the $1,000,000 coverage will cover not only the Uber Eats driver but also other injuries or damages caused by said driver.
The coverage also applies when an Uber Eats driver is injured by another driver who is underinsured/uninsured. After the Uber Eats driver accepts a request or in the process of delivery.
In this case, the insurance will cover the injuries as well as damages of the Uber Eats driver.
Coverage 2: Uber provides a $25,000, $50,000, and $100,000 of commercial auto liability coverage which applies between deliveries.
This coverage applies when an Uber Eats driver’s app is open and available but either before or after any request is made.
The $25,000 coverage is meant to cover property damage which results from the accident. Then, $50,000 is to cover each person involved, and the $100,000 is to cover each accident that occurs.
